Louis XVI Style Set – Console And Mirror In Carved And Gilded Wood, 18th Century

A rare Louis XVI period ensemble comprising a wall console and its matching mirror, finely carved and gilded wood, French work of the 18th century.

Originating from the same private collection (a Provençal château), the two pieces form a harmonious and coherent set, distinguished by balanced proportions and refined execution.

The console is an elegant wall-mounted piece with a gently curved front, resting on two shaped supports joined by a carved stretcher centered with a foliate motif. The richly sculpted decoration combines scrolls, volutes, and stylized foliage in a vocabulary characteristic of the late 18th century.

The original water-gilding, applied over gesso, retains a warm and nuanced patina. Areas of wear and minor losses are entirely consistent with age and contribute to the authenticity and decorative charm of the piece.

The mirror:

An important rectangular mirror with a molded and carved frame, articulated with friezes and projecting moldings typical of the Louis XVI style. It is surmounted by a carved pediment featuring a cartouche, foliate ornament, and a central medallion, lending nobility and architectural verticality to the composition.

The original gilding preserves a beautiful aged patina. Minor wear and small losses, particularly on the pediment, are consistent with the period.

The original mercury glass displays natural alterations to the silvering, more pronounced in one area. This historic oxidation creates a softly shimmering surface and imparts depth and atmosphere, qualities highly appreciated in 18th-century mirrors.

Condition: Overall good antique condition. Wear, minor losses to the gilding, and age-related alterations to the silvering are consistent with the 18th century.
