Mirax Camera, Eg Clément Laboratory, Circa 1915, Photograph
Mirax Laboratory Camera by EG Clément "Postcard Photography in a Minute" circa 1915. This camera was used for mobile photography. The body is made of walnut and mounts on an adjustable stand. The entire unit fits into its original bag. The right side is for taking the picture, while the left side serves as a darkroom for developing and printing postcard-sized photographs. Two grips allow for handheld operation. The MIRAX is equipped with a lens and shutter with adjustable speeds. Very similar to the Afghan Box historically used by itinerant photographers, particularly in Afghanistan, India, and Latin America, it allows for the creation and development of "instant" portraits on black and white photographic paper, directly on location. It enabled generations of street photographers to earn a living by producing unique images, often in the context of markets, fairs, or popular gatherings.
