Author's stamp on the mount.Dominique Roman is a French photographer born in Arles. Specializing in the photography of ancient monuments, his work, in album form, was presented to Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie during their visit to Arles in 1860. In 1861, he exhibited several of these views at the French Photographic Society and enriched his collection with monuments from neighboring towns such as Montmajour, Les Baux, Saint-Rémy, Tarascon, Avignon, Orange, Beaucaire, Nîmes, Saint-Gilles, Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Aix and Saint-Chamas. Inspired by Édouard Baldus, to whom he is often compared, he also used the assembly of negatives to capture the monumentality of the sites.
