Monumental Mythological Statue Of Dionysus In White Carrara Marble
MONUMENTAL MYTHOLOGICAL STATUE OF DIONYSUS Hand-sculpted in white Carrara marble (single block) • PERIOD: Early 19th century • DETAILED DESCRIPTION: This is an important sculptural representation of Dionysus. The work, with its harmonious proportions, depicts the god of wine and ecstasy in his beardless youth, absorbed in his actions. With his raised right arm, he holds a bunch of grapes which he contemplates in ecstasy, while his left hand holds another, thus balancing the composition with natural symmetry. The god's posture follows classical canons: a slightly bent leg adds dynamism to the whole, without disrupting the ideal composition. A short calfskin tunic is belted at the waist with a ribbon, revealing one shoulder and part of the leg. The head is surrounded by garlands of vine flowers, reinforcing the Bacchic iconography. The young god's face is drawn with delicate features: a straight nose, well-defined, slightly parted lips. His eyes are turned gently upwards towards the fruit he holds, while his wavy hair falls with studied nonchalance.
