Dying Galatian In Serpentine Green Marble - After The Ancient

Magnificent serpentine marble sculpture depicting the famous Dying Galatian, after Epigonus of Pergamon (3rd century BC). This Neoclassical piece, of remarkable quality, features powerful modeling and a natural patina that highlights the green hues of the marble. The figure of the wounded Gallic warrior, leaning on his arm, expresses all the nobility and dignity of the ancient hero. The characteristic attributes—sword, shield, torc, and drapery—are found in relief on its base, reinforcing the historical iconography of the scene. The Dying Galatian is one of the most emblematic sculptures of Hellenistic art. Erected in the 3rd century BC to celebrate the victory of Attalus I of Pergamon over the Galatians, the original work is famous for its expressive treatment, the nobility of the vanquished, and the psychological depth that the sculptor imbues in the warrior. Rediscovered in Rome in the 18th century, the sculpture became a major reference for Neoclassical artists. Very good condition, with a chip on the base.
