Valère Bernard (born February 10, 1860 in Marseille, died October 6, 1936 in the same city) was a French painter, engraver, novelist, and poet. Originally from Provence, he wrote his literary works in Occitan. He left behind a significant body of graphic and pictorial work. He created series of engravings of great graphic intensity, inspired in particular by Francisco Goya, such as the "Guerra" series (1893-1895), which explores the theme of death. In his literary and artistic work, he demonstrated sensitivity and compassion for the humble and marginalized. His paintings often depicted landscapes of Provence (for example, "The Valley of Hell at Les Baux-de-Provence") and scenes of Marseille. He was a professor of art history at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. Toward the end of his life, he lost his sight. His paintings and engravings are exhibited in numerous French museums.
