Decorative Oil Painting Of Charles Newell Cc By Daisy Beresford, 1938
Artist: Daisy Beresford
This decorative oil on canvas was painted in May 1938 by Daisy Radcliffe Beresford in her studio, The Hall Studio, located a short walk from our London showroom (NW8).
The affable-looking elderly gentleman is Mr. Charles Newell, Lieutenant of the City of London and former President of the Guildhall Library. The details of the uniform are well executed and the colors are beautifully captured. The canvas shows some signs of wear, but is overall in good condition considering its age. It is currently unframed. Please contact us for a quote; we can easily frame it for you.
Daisy Radcliffe Beresford (née Clague) studied at Heatherley School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, where she won three silver and two bronze medals. She specialized in portraits, landscapes, and interiors and exhibited regularly from 1904 to 1938, notably at the Royal Academy where she presented twelve paintings.
In 1910, she married Frank Ernest Beresford, a fellow student at the Royal Academy and an official war artist. They had two daughters, Averil and Vivian, who later became the sculptor Vivian Bartholomew. The Beresfords lived at 28 Grove End Road, in the St. John's Wood area of London.
