Bartholomew Dandridge (1691-1754), Attributed To - Portrait Of Sir Henry Davenport, III
Oil on canvas. A label on the back identifies the painting's previous owner (Mr. Thomas Green Davies) when it was loaned for exhibition, as well as the person depicted, the notable Henry Davenport III of Shropshire. The Lacock Abbey Estate, associated with the National Trust, houses a larger portrait of Henry Davenport, shown in the Picture Gallery. This portrait, probably posthumous, may have been created by copying this one. Henry Davenport III (1677–1731) was a prominent English nobleman and politician from the landed gentry of Shropshire. He inherited the extensive Davenport family estates, including Davenport House, which he remodeled and extended in the then-fashionable Georgian style under the direction of Francis Smith of Warwick. This gave him considerable social and economic influence, and he commissioned many portraits from the leading British painters of his time. He was Member of Parliament for Worfield, a seat he held on several occasions between 1709 and 1715. His political career took place during a tumultuous period in British history, marked by the rise of the House of Hanover and the intense rivalry between the Whig and Tory parties.- Unframed image size: 70 x 80 cm / 82 x 93 cm with custom-made gilt frame.- Montbaron Gallery includes an information sheet prepared by a qualified art historian with all its lots.
