Enrique Navarro (1924-1997) - Penelope And Ulysses' Ship

Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Signed lower left. In this dreamlike scene with its typically Mediterranean hues of white and blue, Penelope seems to sense Ulysses' arrival on the shores of Ithaca upon seeing a ship beached on the shore. Enrique Navarro was a monumental painter whose brushstrokes and vision established him as one of the greatest masters of post-war Spanish figurative painting. His remarkable training began at the Madrid School of Ceramics, under the tutelage of figures such as Francisco Alcántara and Gómez Moreno, before he entered the prestigious San Fernando School of Fine Arts in 1939. There, his talent fully blossomed, earning him exceptional prizes in fundamental disciplines like color, composition, and drawing from life, and allowing him to refine his art under the guidance of masters of the caliber of Daniel Vázquez Díaz and Manuel Benedito. His work belongs to the venerable Spanish school, initiated by Goya and continued by Solana, finding its own expression in impasto and color. Navarro not only mastered portraiture and composition but also established himself as a sensitive chronicler, delighting in captivating genre scenes of palpable truth. His famous beggars in Retiro Park, painted from life, like the work presented here, are demonstrations of exceptional drawing and a measured use of color, seeking an impasto with an Impressionist accent, and capturing the hidden dignity of the marginalized. His genius transcended the easel to embrace monumentality: a renowned muralist, he left lasting legacies such as the frescoes in the parish church of El Pilar in Madrid and, most memorably, the main cloister of the monastery of Samos illustrating the life of Saint Benedict. Navarro's legacy, whose art is preserved in the Royal Academy of San Fernando and in international collections, is that of a painter who integrated tradition with a modern vision, immortalizing the profound soul of Spain. - Image dimensions without frame: 46 x 55 cm / 62 x 71 cm with exclusive custom frame.
