This superb portrait captures with great sensitivity the elegance and gentleness of a young woman from the late 18th century, early 19th century. Her delicately lit face stands out against a dark background, creating a refined chiaroscuro effect reminiscent of the work of Thomas Lawrence and George Romney.
The artist, clearly influenced by these great portrait painters, has subtly transcribed the grace of the model: a diaphanous complexion, deep gaze and posture marked by restraint of shadows and lights. A British artistic refinement.
Unsigned painting in a very pretty gilded wooden frame to be restored (some chips of gilding).
