Flat Desk With 3 Drawers, 18th Century, Black Lacquered Wood

An elegant, double-sided Regency flat desk, dating from the 18th century, crafted from ebonized wood. It features three drawers in the frieze and three false drawers on the opposite side. The cabriole legs have chamfered edges and are adorned with beautiful bronze ornamentation. The feet are clad in sabots with animal-inspired bases, surmounted by deep acanthus leaves. The handles are drop handles with double attachments. The keyhole escutcheon is topped with a shell motif. The bronze mounts are stamped with a crowned R hallmark. This hallmark dates from the first half of the 18th century and was used for quality control on bronze objects. The tan leather upholstery with tooled decoration and the writing surface were restored and replaced in the mid-20th century. The restoration is invisible on the tips of the legs, concealed by the bronze sabots. The desk has a lovely patina and shows signs of wear. The frame is constructed of beech and oak, with a softwood back panel. Length: 168 cm Width: 78 cm Height: 77 cm
