Engraving Fencing - Of The Quarte Riposte After The Quarte Parade - Ep. XVIII (1763)
Artist: Robert Bénard
PropertiesView / Product Original steel engraving, made with a burin on watermarked laid paper. Engraver: Robert Bénard (France, born in 1734 – ?), 18th-century French engraver. This engraving depicts two fencers in action, executing a parry followed by a riposte in the position known as en quarte. On the left, a man in a white and blue uniform, with one leg bent behind him and his weapon arm extended, has just parried an attack with his rapier. On the right, his opponent, dressed in red and blue, in a fighting stance, launches a direct attack, his right arm extended towards his opponent's torso. The two opponents are depicted without masks, which is typical of 18th-century instructional representations, more focused on aesthetics and demonstration than safety. The plumed hat, fallen to the ground, indicates the movement and realism of the action. Beautiful hand-colored watercolor.
