Considered as the first French commemorative medal, the Saint Hélène medal was established by decree of Napoleon III on 12 August 1857 under the Second Empire. It is dedicated to the 'companions of glory' of Napoleon I in the 'campaigns from 1792 to 1815', in order to partly satisfy the last wishes of Napoleon Bonaparte as written in his will to Saint Helena.

She wears the imperial attributes of Napoleon Bonaparte Premier: The crown, the laurel, her face in profile in bas-relief at the center of the medal, with its ribbon. Everything is protected in this oval wooden frame and protected by a curved glass pane, typical of the frames from French craftsmanship of the Second Empire, in the so-called 'Napoleon III' style.
