Iwan Cerf (1883-1963), Still Life With Boat And Shells, Freemasonry

Artist: Iwan Cerf (1883-1963)
Iwan Cerf (1883-1963) Still Life with Boat and Shells Oil on canvas, signed lower left, surrounded by two symbols, probably Masonic. Dimensions: 60 x 73 cm Dimensions with frame: 71 x 84 cm Biography: Iwan Cerf was a Belgian painter, draftsman, and engraver born in Verviers in 1883 and died in Paris in 1963. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège, he pursued his career early on in Paris, then a major center of European artistic creation, where he settled in 1901 and attended, among others, the Académie Julian. An active artist on the Parisian scene between the two World Wars, he exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Français, and the Salon des Tuileries. His work encompasses still lifes, portraits, nudes, genre scenes, and landscapes. Iwan Cerf and Freemasonry. Initiated into Freemasonry in 1911, Iwan Cerf held an important position within the Grand Lodge of France. He was notably: - founder and first Worshipful Master of the "Papus" lodge - elected Grand Orator of the Grand Lodge in 1945. Close to traditionalist and symbolist circles linked to 20th-century initiatory currents, he also participated in the creation of the "La Grande Triade" lodge, inspired by the ideas of the esoteric thinker René Guénon. This spiritual dimension illuminates a portion of his graphic work, where geometric rigor, balanced forms, and a search for harmony reflect a sensibility akin to Masonic symbolic aesthetics. Our work certainly possesses another level of interpretation, which will undoubtedly resonate with enthusiasts.
