Late 19th-century Orientalist Gouache – Roman Ruins & Palm Trees – Paul Pascal Style
Artist: Pascal
A charming Orientalist gouache from the late 19th century depicting Roman ruins and palm trees under a sunset sky, in the style of Paul Pascal, presented in its original Napoleon III frame.
This small Orientalist gouache, measuring 12 x 15 cm, portrays a desert landscape enlivened by antique columns and two palm trees, bathed in a hazy atmosphere of blue and reddish-brown tones. The composition emphasizes light and atmospheric effect rather than meticulous architectural detail.
The foreground (palm trees, columns) is more defined, while the background dissolves into a subtle haze, a characteristic technique of small Orientalist works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The limited palette, dominated by ochres, warm pinks, and softened blues, creates a particularly decorative sunset atmosphere. Signed "Pascal" in pencil on the back (not studied).
Work sold as Orientalist School, in the style of Paul Pascal.
Technical Details:
Technique: gouache on paper. Paper with fine, regular striations (probably laid).
Sheet dimensions: 11.2 × 14.8 cm. Frame dimensions: 18.2 × 23 cm.
Antique frame: Black wood frame from the Napoleon III/early Third Republic period. Gilt ogee molding. Antique glass with painted border imitating semi-precious materials and mother-of-pearl.
Condition:
Good overall condition. *Minor foxing in places, almost invisible. *Small tear Approximately 5 millimeters at the top edge, without loss.
*Small tear in the lower left corner, without gap.
A quality decorative work, clearly evoking the French Orientalist tradition of the late 19th century.
