This gouache by the Orientalist painter Henri PONTOY (1888–1968) depicts an Orientalist market on a bustling street in Tangier, Morocco
during the 1930s.
Thanks to a scholarship, our painter traveled to North Africa in 1024. There, he met the leading Orientalist painters, including Jacques Majorelle in Ouarzazate. He set up his studio in Rabat
in Morocco (see reverse).
The left side of the street is livelier, with its souk, the red facade of a mosque (?), and a blue rug.
The right side is in the shade, and the center of the painting shows the main street extending to a row of houses.
Signed “Pontoy” (B.G.) and on the back: a map of Rabat with the address of “l’Atelier Pontoy.” Located, in ink: “Tangier – Morocco
