Fernand Wéry, 1886-1964, Belgian painter, engraver, and sculptor born in Ixelles. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ixelles and later in Brussels, where he was taught by Constant Montald. An intimate painter of women and children, like many Belgian artists of his time, Fernand Wéry's early paintings belong to the Post-Impressionist movement. He joined the Fauvist circle and became friends with the group's leading figures, Rik Wouters and Edgard Tytgat. In the 1920s, Fernand Wéry moved towards a more classical style, with detailed and meticulous drawing reminiscent of the rigorous painting of Albrecht Dürer, before being drawn to the Cubism and Expressionism of the avant-garde. He received numerous awards for his work, notably the Auguste Oleffe Prize in 1940. From 1950, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Watermael-Boitsfort, where he lived until his death in 1964. His works are held in the museums of Bruges, Ixelles, Liège, Brighton, and Philadelphia. He is listed in the Bénézit, Arto, and Piron art dictionaries. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
