Silver-embroidered Cloth Cap With A Beak - Alsace, Late 18th/early 19th Centuries
Late 18th/Early 19th Century, Alsace. Rich brocade cap or Alsatian bonnet, for formal occasions or weddings, dating from the late 18th century. The base is made of silver cloth richly embroidered with bouquets of bullion, sequins, spangles, tinsel, and glass beads. The edge is trimmed with a yellow taffeta ribbon, and the slightly dusty lining is made of unbleached linen. These caps from the Colmar or Sungau region were worn over a white undercap. Note the very fine repairs and a few missing sequins. Good overall condition. Dimensions: flat: height 25 cm, width 18 cm. Head circumference: 50 cm.
