The Discus Thrower:
The Discus Thrower (literally, "the discus thrower") is one of the most famous statues of antiquity. Generally attributed to Myron, an Athenian sculptor of the 5th century BC (450 BC), it depicts an athlete throwing a discus.
The Discus Thrower. Myron, a representative of early Classicism, was famous for his depictions of athletes, which explains the attribution. Furthermore, this work is mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History, where the author lists Myron's works. The Discus Thrower is often used to ill
ustrate the Olympic Games. In 1936, as part of the celebrations associated with the organization of the Olympic Games, an exhibition, "Sports of the Greeks," displayed several representations of the Discus Thrower in Berlin, including the small bronze statuette from the Glyptothek in Munich.
Greek statuary and the perfect bodies it represents are fascinating. In 2008, on the occasion of the Beijing Olympics, the Discus Thrower was exhibited in China as part of an exhibition on the Olympic Games of Antiquity.
Its success was such that it became the centerpiece of another exhibition, "The Human Body in Greek Art and Society."
Chinese artists then became fascinated by this figure.
