Very pretty oil on panel measuring 40cm x 70cm plus frame 50cm x 80cm, signed lower left Noël Canepa. Painted with a palette knife in light tones. This artist, born in 1885 in Bastia, was a professional painter and musician. The youngest of 15 children, he was wounded in the First World War by a bullet that pierced his chest. He lived in Marseille, first on Rue Sainte, then on the Corniche. Specializing in seascapes and flowers, he painted under the influence of Monticelli, his spiritual mentor. Becoming increasingly blind, he committed suicide at the age of 80 in 1965. He lived from his painting. He was called by his contemporaries "The Monticelli of the 20th Century."
