The Estuary. Charles Tranchand. Painter From Angers. Early 20th Century.
Artist: Charles Tranchand
Painter: Charles Tranchand, born in 1884 in Angers. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met many painters. Returning to his native Anjou, he became involved with the local artistic community, within which he was very active. He ended his career as a professor of fine arts. His son, Georges, also became an important artist in Angers. This delicate oil on cardboard depicts an estuary landscape at low tide, bathed in soft light with pink and silver tones. A few boats rest on the calm water, while the sandy shore occupies the foreground. On the right, a mast with a flag is visible. On the left, two figures appear to be searching for seashells. The brushwork is free, almost vibrant, and prioritizes atmosphere over descriptive precision. The subtle reflections in the water and the pastel palette lend the whole an impression of quiet poetry. Executed on cardboard, this work possesses the spontaneous charm of studies painted from life at the beginning of the 20th century. Technique: oil on cardboard. Condition: good. Dimensions: 30 × 19 cm. Period: 1930. Unsigned.
