Still Life With Fruit And A Large Platter. 1900. Oil On Canvas
Still Life, oil on canvas. Unsigned. Circa 1900/30. This still life presents a warm and colorful composition typical of studio painting of this period. At the center dominates a large, decorated earthenware dish, adorned with red, blue, and green floral motifs, reminiscent of traditional Central or Southern European ceramics. In the foreground, the artist has arranged an array of various fruits: lemons, apples, and browned fruits, painted with thick brushstrokes. On the right, a metal or stoneware jug balances the composition. The background consists of a freely brushed ochre and green ground. The whole evokes the work of an artist or art student, influenced by post-impressionist trends. The frame on the back, made of old wood, bears a circular stamp representing an anchor and a caduceus, the trademark of the Lefranc & Cie company, founded in 1836, which was one of the very first French companies to sell materials for artists. Size: 46 × 38 cm.
