The Seaside. Oil On Cardboard By Charles Tranchand, Painter From Angers. Early 20th Century
Artist: Charles Tranchand
Painter: Charles Tranchand, born in 1884 in Angers. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met many painters. Returning to his native Anjou, he became involved with the local artistic community, within which he was very active. He ended his career as a professor of fine arts. His son, Georges, also became an important artist in Angers. This delicate little painting depicts a seaside scene bathed in soft, slightly hazy light. It evokes Brittany. A few boats rest at the water's edge, their colorful hulls reflected in an almost still surface. The houses on the quay, with their light-colored facades, blend into a pastel atmosphere where the outlines are deliberately softened. The palette is subtle, combining pink, beige, and grayish-blue tones. The reflections in the water are rendered with great sensitivity. The intimate format reinforces the spontaneous character of the work. The brushwork is supple and vibrant, allowing light to shine through rather than focusing on detail. Executed in oil on cardboard, this small composition possesses the charm of plein air studies, where atmosphere takes precedence over descriptive precision.
