"Louis XVI Style Carved And Gilded Wooden Mirror With Medallion"
Carved and gilded wooden mirror, Louis XVI period. Decorated with floral scrolls and a ribbon in the pediment framing an engraving. Mounted on a gray Trianon wood base. Original mercury glass. Height: 107 cm. Width: 63 cm. Minor restoration to the medallion (2 cm) and two beads. This romantic and elegant mirror would be equally at home on a mantelpiece, above a piece of furniture, or simply on a wall. An authentic piece that testifies to the craftsmanship and refinement of the 18th century. It should be noted that this type of pedimented mirror was so popular in the 19th and 20th centuries that numerous copies were made over the years. You will often find the small medallion in the pediment fitted with a mirror, whereas an oval medallion of this type always featured a watercolor engraving depicting a toilette scene in the 18th century. While some period mirrors may have been altered, copies always include a mirror in this location.
