Clock To The Attributes Of Music, War And Peace
An allegorical clock representing War, the Arts, and Peace, a superb
example of French craftsmanship, dating from the Napoleon III period,
circa 1855. The mechanism is stamped "Vincenti et Cie 1855," a
clockmaker listed in Tardy's dictionary of French watchmakers.
The finely chased and gilded bronze case features a fluted column at its center, supporting a domed white enamel dial delicately decorated with a polychrome garland. It is flanked by slender gilt hands and protected by a domed glass.
On either side, at the base, a contrasting design depicts military symbols alongside a musical motif. The whole is surmounted, at its center, by a pair of doves carried on a cloud, symbolizing Peace.
Original mechanism, unaltered. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell.
