Christ Triumphant On The Cross - 18th Century
A rare iconographic theme is what makes this representation so interesting. Christ is no longer on the Cross, even though he has already suffered the stigmata. This is an intriguing anachronism, because after his crucifixion, he is never again found standing and carrying the Cross. Here, the resurrected Christ has conquered death through the Cross. This is the message conveyed by this work, an iconography of victory that defies earthly chronology. Polychrome wood sculpture in the round. The polychromy is in poor condition, with numerous losses of material.
