Antique 9ct Gold Half Hunter Pocket Watch

Swiss movement, Birmingham assay, late 19th / early 20th century

This antique half hunter pocket watch is housed in a 9-carat gold case and exemplifies the refined practicality and decorative restraint of late Victorian to Edwardian watchmaking. The front cover features a circular glazed aperture, allowing the time to be read while the case remains closed, and is encircled by black Roman numerals, a hallmark of the half hunter style.

The case back is fully hallmarked with the gold standard marks “9” and “.375”, the anchor symbol of the Birmingham Assay Office, and the sponsor’s mark “E.W.C.Co” for the Eastern Watch Case Company, a well-known British case maker of the period. The internal dust cover is also fashioned in 9ct gold, reflecting a higher level of quality and finish.

The dial is executed in white enamel, signed “Criterion”, and fitted with black Roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock. The watch retains its dark blued steel hands, providing crisp contrast against the enamel surface. The movement is a 15-jewel Swiss mechanism, branded Criterion and marked for two adjustments, visible upon opening the inner cover. Winding and time-setting are operated via a keyless crown mechanism at 12 o’clock, consistent with later 19th-century developments.

The gold case displays general surface scratching and wear, commensurate with age and regular use, while the movement remains cleanly presented, reflecting the honest condition expected of a well-preserved vintage timepiece.
