Horn Snuffbox, Maasai, Kenya - Tanzania, East Africa
Exquisite and precious, this miniature snuffbox, called Olkidong in the Maasai language, testifies to the subtle interplay between everyday use and body adornment in the pastoral cultures of East Africa.
Carved from a carefully polished horn, it is mounted as a necklace by a long, double chain of braided brass, to which a small protective amulet is set. The stopper, made of finely crafted leather, is decorated with antique colored beads. Worn around the neck by Maasai men of Kenya and Tanzania, this snuffbox accompanied their daily activities while affirming the status of its owner.
