Clock Wall "eagle" Planchon
A rare and highly decorative Empire-style wallclock, dating from the Napoleon III period, circa 1870, signed on thedial and on the mechanism: "Planchon à Paris," a renowned lineof 18th-century clockmakers, referenced in Tardy's Dictionary of FrenchClockmakers. Gilt bronze.
A wide ribbon bow, ending in a long, finely undulating drape thatrealistically imitates the natural movement of fabric, forms thedecorative element and appears to suspend the clock. The clock ishoused within a dark green patinated bronze cylinder, adorned withlaurel branches, symbols of victory and glory, framing a very large andsublime domed white enamel dial, highlighted by a finely chiseledborder of stars. The entire piece is protected by a domed glass.
The time is read by means of finely crafted gilt hands, chiseled with amultitude of laurel leaves.
The highlight of this piece is a magnificent imperial eagle, creatingthe illusion of flight as it carries the clock. The sculpture isparticularly expressive: detailed plumage and a dynamic posture conveyan impression of power and protection.
Original spiral escapement mechanism, unmodified. Strikes the hours andhalf-hours on an antique bell. Mechanism numbered 785.
The wall mount is thick and sturdy.
