Large oil on canvas depicting a Bacchic episode inspired by the famous composition by Peter Paul Rubens housed in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. The scene illustrates the nursing panisca, a secondary motif from the great Rubensian tradition, where sensuality, carnal vitality, and Dionysian spirit mingle in a warm, earthy atmosphere.
Description:
This version focuses on the maternal group, rendered with great softness of modeling and a luminous flesh tone characteristic of Flemish painting in the Rubensian tradition. The generous volumes, the smooth transitions of light, and the enveloping chiaroscuro convey a convincing assimilation of the Northern Baroque style.
The brushwork favors rounded forms and a warm palette dominated by ochres, browns, and pinks.
The composition derives from a reworking of the Rubensian model from the mid-17th century, widely disseminated in Flemish workshops and taken up again in the 18th century by followers eager to perpetuate this mythological repertoire.
The canvas is presented in a later decorative Louis XV-style frame.
Canvas dimensions: 105 × 61 cm - Dimensions with frame: 133.5 × 89 cm.
Condition:
Good overall condition. Superficial craquelure consistent with age.
A decorative and evocative work illustrating the survival of the Rubensian taste in late Flemish painting, ideal for a classical interior or a collection focused on Baroque mythological imagery.
