Object description :

"Gilt Bronze Kiss Of Peace – Castile, Circa 1567-1580 – Salvator Mundi"
Gilt bronze kiss of peace – Castile, circa 1567-1580 – Salvator Mundi.

Rare Castilian kiss of peace in cast, chased, picado, and gilt bronze, datable to the third quarter of the 16th century.
This piece belongs to a high-level Spanish production intended for liturgical use, characteristic of workshops active during the episcopate of Francisco Tello de Sandoval.

Description:

The rectangular plaque is structured like a Renaissance façade: two fluted pilasters with Tuscan capitals frame a central relief depicting the Salvator Mundi. Christ, with a halo, blesses with his right hand while his left holds the orb surmounted by a cross, classical iconography affirming his universal sovereignty.

The base features a symmetrical decoration of scrolls and cartouches.
The pediment is surmounted by a simplified episcopal armorial medallion, corresponding to the arms of the Tello/Sandoval lineage. This element links the model to a limited series commissioned for diocesan distribution in Castile between 1567 and 1580.

The reverse retains its original handle, designed for liturgical handling during the rite of the kiss of peace.

It is in good overall condition with consistent wear to the gilding and a uniform antique patina.

Dimensions: 13.5 cm high x 9 cm wide.

This piece is comparable to models held in Spanish museum collections. A liturgical object of the Spanish Renaissance, both sculptural and historical, it is a direct testament to Castilian religious production in the second half of the 16th century.

Condition:

Good condition, beautiful antique patina.
