Papal Silver Medal, Pius XII, exhortation to peace, 1940
This medal was struck in an edition of 2095 by Aurelio Mistruzzi. It is presented in its original red leather case decorated with the arms of Pius XII.
Obverse: PIVS XII PONTIFEX MAXIMVS A II. Bust of Pius XII facing right, wearing a skullcap, mozzetta, and a stole embroidered with the inscription PAX and a cross within an oval and arabesques. Below, the signature MISTRUZZI.
Reverse: OPVS IVSTITIAE PAX. Peace, triumphant over the spirit of evil (the severed head of the vanquished Medusa at her feet), bears the symbols of Charity (the cross) and Justice (the scales). On either side of the throne are written vertically IVSTITIA and CHARITAS, and below, an olive branch.
Medal in good condition, with a small dent on the edge. The case is slightly rubbed and has a small piece of leather missing from the top.
