Chinese Guanyin Porcelain Jingdezhen Fertility, Safe Pregnancy & Children In Good Health

Antique Chinese porcelain figure depicting Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, shown in the traditional Songzi Guanyin form, also known as “Guanyin Who Grants Children”, seated and holding a small child in her lap. The figure is decorated in a vibrant famille verte palette, with green robes finely painted with floral motifs in blue, yellow, black and white enamels.

Songzi Guanyin refers to a form of Guanyin traditionally prayed to for fertility, safe pregnancy, healthy children and family continuity. Guanyin is shown wearing a hooded mantle and prayer beads, holding a Buddhist sutra book in her left hand. Her expression is calm and contemplative, with delicately modelled facial features. The child, symbolising fertility, protection and compassion, sits peacefully against her robe, in keeping with this iconography popular during the late Qing period.

The underside bears an impressed square four-character Chinese seal mark reading “Jingdezhen zhi” (景德鎮製), meaning “Made in Jingdezhen”, referring to the renowned porcelain-producing centre in Jiangxi province.
