Large Folk-blown Glass Chalice, 18th Century, 20cm, Botanical Engraving
Artist: Art Populaire
Large glass, 20cm tall, base: 11cm, hand-blown. Round, rolled foot still bears the pontil mark of glassblower. Hollow, ringed baluster leg. Truncated conical body is engraved of a wedding wheel design of garlands, flowers, and a heliotrope. The rim is 10.5cm in diameter. "Kelch glas," 18th century, Germany, chalice-shaped.
This large glass was intended for prestige and was undoubtedly meant to be engraved with noble coats of arms. However, as you can see on our photos, an open bubble during the blowing process relegated it to a lower quality, hence the unfinished pontil mark and the somewhat poor quality of the engraving, likely entrusted to an apprentice.
Therefore, it is a rare piece of folk art. Weight: 350g.
