"Portrait Of A Young Woman In Profile, Wearing A Headscarf, Ingres School, Oil On Canvas, 1830"
Portrait of a Young Woman in Profile, French Ingresque School, circa 1830, oil on canvas, stretcher stamped Roux. A beautiful young woman's head depicted in profile, in a silent and introspective atmosphere. The model is rendered with a very precise drawing (clear profile, finely defined nose and mouth), enhanced by soft modeling of the flesh tones. The uniform blue-gray background, devoid of any anecdotal detail, reinforces the "medallion" effect and the character study. Her hair is wrapped in a scarf in ochre and cream tones, and she wears a dark costume. The work clearly belongs to a Neoclassical aesthetic, known as Ingresque: primacy of outline, hieratic pose, measured idealization, blended transitions, and economy of means (neutral background, absence of decoration). This is a high-quality studio portrait/study, typical of the Parisian studios of the 1820s and 1830s, within the circle of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. French School, Parisian studio, late Restoration/early July Monarchy, circa 1827-1835. Oil on canvas. Old, slightly thick paint, unlined. Original stretcher with original nails (no other re-nailing holes noted). Marks/indications on the reverse: Paint merchant's stamp on the stretcher: Maison Roux, rue Croix-des-Petits-Champs (supplier's mark). An interesting material clue for situating the support within the Parisian art market of the first half of the 19th century. Dimensions: later giltwood frame 50 x 41 cm, canvas 41 x 33 cm. Original canvas, unlined. Possible wear and slight signs of age on the surface, without major alteration apparent in the photos, trace of signature in the lower right corner, illegible, modern presentation frame.
