"Vintage Marly Frères Coffee Table From Bordeaux, 1950s"
A very beautiful vintage coffee table from the 1950s by Marly Frères in Bordeaux. It features a light solid wood base topped with a circular glass top and a lower round mirrored shelf. Note the elegance of this model with its curved saber legs adorned with small cylindrical chromed bronze elements to support the glass tops. The table is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks on the glass, only minor scratches from use and very slight oxidation spots on the mirror in places. Originally, the Marly company, founded by Poncet Marly in 1835 at 2 rue du Cerf-Volant in Bordeaux, worked exclusively in glassmaking. Due to its success, it moved to 14 rue des Bahutiers. Medals won at the Paris Salons in 1849, 1855, and 1856, as well as at the Bordeaux International Exposition in 1895, opened up new avenues for growth. The address changed again in 1911. at Cours de l'Agonne, then in 1949 a spectacular expansion took place on a plot of more than 5 hectares…. Other points of sale in Nantes, Toulouse, and Limoges further strengthened the business, followed by Algeria and Morocco from 1951 onwards, and also overseas departments. Maison Marly Frères, a true family business, continued to distinguish itself by using atomized silvering and became the manufacturer of the famous mirrors for Jacques Hitier and other leading designers of the 1950s to 1970s. Then came the personal creation of various furniture pieces, always incorporating glass and mirrors, such as this table and many other furnishings, chests of drawers, doors, bedside tables… an elegance blending glass, wood, and metal. In 1982, a great loss occurred with the deaths of Gabriel and John Marly, and the upheavals in the glass industry forced Jacques and Robert Marly to close their workshops and boutiques, and the people of Bordeaux lost one of their renowned interior designers and creators. This elegant table still bears the Maison Marly label under the mirror. For practical reasons, it can be shipped within a Excellent packaging.
