Late 19th Century Greece. Rare hammam towel or Peshtemal in white looped cotton, densely embroidered with silver threads. This ritual hammam towel originates from Ottoman Greece. The weave is complex, a ribbed basin type, alternating twill stripes on one side and looped terry cloth sections for the body on the other. The embroidery is double-sided and displays a dense design of daisies in a lattice pattern framed by wide floral borders. It has original, tapered cotton fringes on both ends. The piece is clean and has been cleaned, retaining only slight and discreet stains; there are no other defects. Overall, it is in good structural condition. A rare piece. Dimensions: 180 cm x 109 cm.
