Large Carved And Gilded Wooden Mirror – 18th Century
This important antique mirror dates from the 18th century and is crafted in carved and gilded wood, displaying fine workmanship and elegant proportions. The rectangular frame is richly ornamented with moulded and carved decoration, articulated by friezes and projecting mouldings characteristic of high-quality decorative cabinetmaking of the period.
The mirror is surmounted by a carved cartouche pediment, which adds both nobility and vertical emphasis to the composition. The original water-gilding, applied over a traditional preparatory ground, retains a warm and nuanced patina. Areas of wear and minor losses—particularly visible on the carved pediment—are entirely consistent with the age of the piece and contribute to its authenticity and character.
The original mercury glass shows natural wear to the silvering, more pronounced in one area. Rather than detracting from the object, this gentle alteration lends the mirror a soft, lively depth, favouring atmosphere and presence over a perfectly neutral reflection. It is precisely this quality that gives the mirror its charm and evocative power.
With its generous dimensions, aged patina and visible history, this mirror is a striking decorative element, well suited to a characterful interior, a library, an entrance hall or above a fireplace, where it will bring light, depth and a strong decorative presence.
