Anonymous, 19th Century - View Of Animated Rome
This ink drawing, dated 1835, offers a lively view of Rome. It blends ancient architecture, street scenes and human figures. The whole evokes the lively atmosphere of the city in the 19th century.
In the center, a circular temple dominates the composition. This is probably the Temple of Hercules Victor, located near the Tiber. To the left, a group of figures, accompanied by dogs and a cart, enliven the foreground. On the right, the urban perspective extends into a series of buildings, treated with care.
The line is fine, precise, and shows a fine mastery of drawing. The handwritten annotations at the bottom of the folio, although partially erased, add documentary interest. Despite visible freckling, the work retains an undeniable charm.
