Carved And Gilded Wooden Mirror – Louis XVI Period, 18th Century
An elegant Louis XVI-style mirror from the late 18th century, made of carved, openwork, and gilded wood.
Rectangular in shape, the mirror is framed by gilded molding decorated with pearls. It is surmounted by a large openwork pediment, characteristic of the neoclassical ornamental style of the late 18th century.
At the center of the pediment is a quiver filled with arrows, flanked by two facing birds and flowers. The composition is set beneath a laurel wreath and extends laterally with scrollwork and cascading foliage.
The lower section is enlivened by carved motifs in the shape of interlocking leaves, while the sides retain a sober decoration that balances the richness of the pediment.
The original gilding exhibits numerous shades, revealing the underlying red base in places. This wear and these irregularities lend the piece a beautiful depth and attest to its age.
The back retains its original wooden panel mounting.
A particularly decorative mirror, with slender proportions and an ornamental repertoire characteristic of the Louis XVI style.
