Small Table, Empire-style Side Table—early 19th Century
A charming little side table from the Empire period, dating from the early 19th century, made of oak and topped with a white veined marble slab.
With its slender and elegant proportions, the front features two stacked drawers fitted with small brass knobs. The drawer fronts display a beautiful, symmetrically arranged grain pattern.
The front is punctuated by two freestanding column-like stiles, characteristic of the architectural vocabulary of the Empire period. These frame a low crossbar shelf, which ends at the front with a curved cutout. The rear posts, which are more understated, reinforce the piece’s carefully constructed balance.
The tabletop consists of white marble with pronounced gray veining, set within a wooden frame. The marble was previously cracked in two places; this flaw is visible in the photographs and should be taken into account when assessing the piece’s condition.
With its compact size, this small piece of furniture could serve various purposes in an early 19th-century interior. Today, it can be used as a nightstand, end table, or small side table.
The understated elegance of the oak, the architectural design of the columns, and the luminosity of the marble combine to create a particularly decorative piece of furniture, representative of the neoclassical taste of the Empire period.
