"Grenadine Silk Shawl With Brocaded Patterns In Chamois And Gold - France, Circa 1860"
Circa 1860, France. Square shawl in Grenadine silk with remarkable transparency, probably made in Lyon or Saint-Étienne during the Second French Empire. Black silk woven with a double twist (which defines Grenadine silk). Decorated with a scattering of stylized flowers in brown and gold lozenges, framed by chamois taffeta borders crossed with yellow stripes. Colored knotted fringes on all four sides. The Grenadine silk has retained its original stiff finish. Three tiny pinholes are present (see the last two photos). It is rare to find Grenadine shawls in such good condition despite their age! Wearable today. Very good overall condition in terms of color and preservation. Dimensions: 160 cm x 160 cm.
