François Verdier (1651-1730) The Presentation In The Temple
Artist: François Verdier
Oil on oak panel, tondo, 26.5 cm in diameter.
This oil on panel depicts the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, an episode from Christ's childhood recounted by the Evangelist Luke (2:22).
The composition is similar to a drawing held at the Louvre Museum (inv. 33220), attributed to François Verdier. A student and collaborator of Charles Le Brun, Verdier stayed in Rome from 1668 to 1671, a period that profoundly influenced his style. Admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1678 and appointed professor in 1684, he exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1704 onward. With the exception of the addition of the curtain and the substitution of the reclining figure in the foreground with a still life, the composition of our painting faithfully reproduces the preparatory sketch held at the Louvre. No large-format painting based on this model is known to date, which might suggest that the project remained at the sketch stage. Verdier's distinctive style is evident in the muscular, stocky proportions of the figures, the treatment of the draperies, and the subdued, Roman-inspired lighting. A prolific artist, Verdier is now represented in numerous private and public collections, most notably the Louvre Museum.
Condition: oxidized old varnish; minor losses and chips around the edges.
