"Flemish School, Circa 1650–1750 - Small Painting On Copper"
Flemish School, circa 1650–1700. Small painting on copper. Dimensions: 14 × 11.5 cm. A charming small antique landscape painted on copper, typical of Flemish production in the second half of the 17th century. The work depicts a lively view by the water, dominated by a fortified village with pointed roofs, rendered in warm tones evoking a twilight sky. A small figure in the foreground adds a touch of life to the scene. The copper support, highly prized in the 17th and 18th centuries for its fineness and durability, allows for meticulous execution and very smooth color transitions. The whole presents the poetry of idealized Flemish landscapes, in the spirit of the Brueghelian tradition. The work shows old soiling, oxidation, and wear consistent with its age, but the painting remains legible and stable. A restoration (cleaning and varnishing) could further enhance the painting's luminosity. It is presented in an antique frame with a 19th-century patina, in keeping with the charm of the room. A small, decorative, and authentic collector's painting, belonging to the tradition of Nordic landscapes on metal, sought after for their intimate format and historically charming character.
