When the traditional craftsmanship of Japan’s ash sandstone meets the taste of modern contemporary..
Modern creation, this vase with an ash-like aspect is a creation of the Algerian ceramic artist Kamel Boubekeur created from the ancestral technique of rapid firing of Japanese chamotted sandstone: the "Raku" dating from the 16th century revisited to today’s taste.
The process of Raku is that of a rapid cooking of the sandstone with fire and ash. The incandescent parts can be smoked, soaked in water, burned or left in the open air, once fired, the temperature of the furnace goes up until obtaining a significant thermal shock, giving this astonishing result.
Unlike sandstone enamel, which requires at least 1,260 °C, the glazes applied in the raku technique are done at low temperatures, starting from 700 °C, which gives this vase its ash-gray appearance with a discrete crackle that is much more 'raw'.
The raku pieces of this size and shape being very rare, this raku bottle vase is exceptional, by its size and shape mixing geometry and traditional know-how with the taste of contemporary art.
