A monument of faith straight from 18th century Germany.
Created in the 18th century, this black-stained oak bust comes from Germany, more precisely from the State of Baden-Württemberg (or region of the Black Forest.)
A true little masterpiece of religious craftsmanship of its time, this bust is marked by the brutalist aspect of popular art from this region of Germany. What is interesting is this shape similar to a "block" where the rounded head, face and neck have been carved from wood in order to reveal its features.
Not quite immobile, this sculpture preserves an idea of movement: the veil and its folds, the hair of the Virgin as well as her dimples make it expressive. Although one can detect a relatively closed face, in mourning: characteristic of the Virgin at Calvary, an episode where the Virgin Mary sees her son crucified on the cross at Golgotha.
One can see the wood that has worked over time - which is in no way wear - but a natural action of oak wood to 'split' and create these small cracks. The black color is not natural, it was applied to oak wood to better match the craft fashion of the Black Forest in the 18th century.
This bust was to be kept in a small private chapel, or in the home of a wealthy believer of his time, most likely in a niche provided for that purpose (above the doors, in the living room or any room provided for that purpose.)
Lovers of ancient religious sculptures and religious & popular crafts from the Black Forest to the eighteenth century, do not hesitate and treat yourself to this sculpture of the Virgin Mary at Calvary now!
