"Luc Belin (1878-1959) Grey Sky In Provence. Lyon School, Villeneuve-lès-avignon, Paul Saïn"
Adorable small painting on panel by Luc Belin, signed lower right and titled on an old label on the back "Grey Sky over a Farmhouse in Provence". The painting measures 19x24cm without the frame and 24x29cm with the frame. This is a superb post-impressionist composition by Luc Belin, who paints a Provençal landscape. Under a grey sky, he depicts a small Provençal farmhouse in the middle of the garrigue. His technique is perfect, thanks to a beautiful, slightly divided brushstroke and a most subtle palette displaying an incredible number of colors: greens, mauves, ochres, oranges, blues, greys, etc. A true little post-impressionist gem by an excellent painter, relatively unknown to the general public but incredibly talented. Listed among the Lyon School, even though he painted a large number of Provençal landscapes, as well as scenes along the Rhône, he was also a student of Paul Saïn. Joseph Pierre Lucien Belin (known as Luc) – Born March 5, 1878, in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Gard, he took over Eugène David-Girin's studio at 2 rue Paradis, Lyon 2, which is now called rue David-Girin. Luc Belin also owned the painter's house in Pérouges. – Enrolled at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts on November 5, 1894. – Student of Paul Sain, Tollet, and Bonnardel. – Exhibited with the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts (SLBA) from 1913 to 1959. – Out of competition at the SLBA in 1924. – Portrait of my paternal grandfather, Listello Romano (1924). – Officer of the Academy in 1926. – Gold Medal in 1926. – Salon Medal in 1930. – Bernhin de Villers Prize at the Salon des Artistes Français Born in Paris in 1932. - Officer of Public Instruction in 1932. - Medal of Honor of the SLBA in 1932. - Died on December 26, 1959 in Alix (Rhône), buried in Villette d'Anthon (Isère), where his family originated. Some titles of his paintings created around Chaponost: 1919 Aqueducts of Plat de l'Air; 1929 Banks of the Garon; 1932 The Road to Baret; 1937 The Old Bridge of Brignait; 1938 The Tower of Millery. In 1936 he participated in the creation of the bas-relief for the Lyon Labor Exchange, commissioned by a municipal commission chaired by Mr. Cohendy, 1st Deputy Mayor of Lyon. I found this information on a website about the artist, here is the link: http://d.fornellidellaca1.free.fr/luc_belin_artiste_peintre.htm His works regularly appear at auction, but his signature often remains undeciphered, resulting in many works being missed. This painting is in perfect original condition and comes in a very attractive antique gilt frame. The artwork is guaranteed authentic.
