Pietà Attributed To Annibale Carracci, Ivory Engraving, Tortoiseshell And Silver Frame
Artist: Attr. Annibale Carracci
Ancient engraving depicting the “Pietà”, attributed to Annibale Carracci (Bologna, 1560–1609), derived from the celebrated composition known as the Christ of Caprarola, one of the highest achievements of Italian Baroque art.
The work, datable between the late 16th and early 17th century, was executed using traditional engraving techniques, etching and burin, and is impressed on authentic antique ivory, an exceptionally precious material that lends remarkable luminosity and refinement to the image.
At the lower right appears the “AC” monogram, traditionally associated with the Carracci artistic circle.
The scene portrays the Virgin Mary and mourning figures lamenting the dead Christ, according to the classical Pietà iconography, rendered with strong emotional depth and expressive sensitivity.
The engraving is preserved in a coeval period frame, made of polished red tortoiseshell, with finely hand-chased silver corner mounts, fully consistent with the taste and materials of the period.
The artwork is accompanied by a CITES certificate, confirming the lawful possession and commercial circulation of the antique natural materials used, in compliance with current regulations.
A rare and highly collectible piece, of great interest to collectors, scholars, and connoisseurs of Old Master prints.
