" 18th-century Engraving From The Ceiling Of The Grand Théâtre In Bordeaux. Le Mire Noël "
A very fine intaglio engraving by Noël Le Mire (Rouen 1724/Paris 1800).It depicts the ceiling of the Grand Théâtre in Bordeaux. This commission was completed in 1782. Following the completion of the ceiling from January to July 1777, the painter Jean Baptiste Claude Robin (Paris 1734/Chouzy 1818) asked Noël Le Mire to create the engraving, which he finished in 1782.A copy could be obtained at the Cloître des Bernardins in Paris from Mr. Robin. The circular frame with a central hinge, allowing it to rotate, was made by the firm of Sieur Isabey, a print dealer on Rue Gesvres. This allowed the frame to be rotated to read the inscriptions. For reference: (Lemire's engraving, inventoried in 1791 in the passage of the King's Maps and the Geography Department and described as "a round engraving, representing the ceiling of the Bordeaux theater, dedicated to Marshal de Mouchy," was put up for sale in Versailles in 1794 and sold for 37 livres and 1 sol to Citizen Fréron.)The engraving is in good condition, with only a few foxing spots (see photos). The frame is in fair condition.Dimensions without frame: 79 cmInterior dimensions: 66 cm
