Architectural View with Classical Ruins and Figures – Oil on canvas. Italy, second half of the 18th century, in the manner of Michele Marieschi.
Charming imaginary view (architectural capriccio) set in a port landscape, executed in oil on canvas and attributable to an artist active in the Venetian area in the late 18th century. The painting echoes the lively pictorial invention of Michele Marieschi (1710–1743), a Venetian painter and engraver renowned for his theatrical and perspective city views.
The scene is dominated by majestic classical ruins: triumphal arches, bridges and towers rise above a riverside setting animated by boats and small figures in 18th-century costume, portrayed in narrative gestures. The theatrical composition, enriched by airy perspectives and luminous contrasts, evokes poetic and fantastic atmospheres, suspended between reality and imagination.
The light palette, fluid brushwork, and luminous glazes reveal the influence of Canaletto and Marco Ricci, filtered through a more theatrical and painterly sensibility typical of the Marieschi school.
A piece of high decorative and collectible value, ideal for classic interiors or 18th-century vedutismo collections.
Very good condition, with stable canvas, fine craquelure and minor retouches consistent with the period.
